Choosing how we live: Not about being good - A six week series from 3rd Feb 2026
18 January 2026Choosing How We Live
Not about being good
A practical exploration of how meditation and ethics, together, unlock the process of becoming more fully ourselves.
A six week series from Tuesday 3rd February, 7:15pm to 9:15pm - part of our Drop-in class
Suitable for all levels of experience.
Many of us are drawn to meditation or Buddhism because we sense that life has more to offer than simply getting by, staying busy, or living on autopilot. We want a life that feels meaningful, coherent, and true to what really matters to us.
This six-week course explores how that aspiration connects with the way we actually live. Rather than treating ethics as rules or ideals to live up to, we’ll approach it as a practical enquiry into how our actions of body, speech, and mind shape who we are becoming — and how we are for other people.
Drawing on Subhadramati’s book Not About Being Good, the course explores the close relationship between ethics and meditation. Meditation helps us see ourselves more clearly and honestly; ethical reflection helps that clarity express itself in everyday life. Each supports the other. Together, they offer a path of learning, integrity, and gradual transformation.
The emphasis throughout is experiential and reflective rather than prescriptive. We’ll explore real-life choices, habits, and relationships, noticing what leads to greater ease, connection, and self-respect — and what doesn’t. This is not about judging ourselves or striving to be “good”, but about learning from experience and choosing how we live, moment by moment.
Each evening includes guided meditation, short talks, reflection, and discussion in a supportive atmosphere. The course is suitable for people new to meditation as well as those with some experience, and is relevant to life as it’s lived now, in a modern Western context.
